NOTICE: Changes to our visiting and volunteer programs.
January 6, 2025
We are launching a new Animal Enrichment Volunteer Program starting in February 2025. This new program will have experienced volunteers support our Animal Care Team with important enrichment activities for cats and dogs including exercises and training.
Drop-in and appointment visiting times (dog walking/ cat play) are being phased out, and general kennel access for visiting and viewing will end on January 27 to accommodate our new structured programming.
February 4, 2025
Our team is now taking applications for Animal Enrichment Volunteer positions. We do anticipate there will be a significant interest in this new program, and we can only accommodate a limited number of volunteers to support our animal care team at the shelter. More info can be found below......
Animal Enrichment Volunteer
Enrichment volunteers are responsible for working closely with our shelter staff to provide structured daily exercise, training, and socialization to animals waiting to be adopted. As a municipal impound facility, most of the pets we care for have been abandoned by their owners and typically have behavior issues that need to be addressed before they can be adopted into new homes.
Volunteers should have experience working with shy, fearful, untrained, and difficult-to-handle cats and dogs. Applicants for these positions must;
Be 18 years of age or older, or 6 years of age or older, and be accompanied by a guardian.
MUST be comfortable and capable of working around and safely handling animals (cats and dogs) that maybe untrained, unsocialized, and fearful.
Be capable of working in a fast-paced, loud, and changing environment.
Be committed to at least two, 2 hour shifts at the shelter per month.
Willing to follow shelter protocols and procedures, as well as take directions from staff.
Accept all risk and liability related to activities at the Lethbridge Animal Shelter.
If you have the skills and experience to support animal enrichment activities at the shelter, please complete the application form below. We do receive a significant amount of interest in this program; however, there are only a limited number of positions open at this time. Approved applicants will complete a brief screening interview before orientation and training.
